The hugely successful Care Home initiative is about to be taken to a new level. Launched in May 2019 by Carl Blackman, the provision has seen residents from Newton House Care Home and Apple Trees Care and Reablement Centre engage in a variety of inclusive physical activity sessions.
The sports currently being enjoyed are Boccia and New Age Kurling, both of which are fully inclusive and adaptable. They are low physical intensity but high in mental enrichment and fun! This makes them the perfect sports for elderly people to play.
Feedback from all residents has been fantastic. Carl says:
“I am overwhelmed by the positive impact seen as a result of the inspire+ Care Home provision. I am really passionate about the benefits of physical activity, and we are excited to announce that the provision will be continued into 2020 with a great new twist! We will be bringing generations together in the name of sport.”
Carl is working alongside the inspire+ Core Team to develop an inter-generational programme that will aim to strengthen and regenerate our communities by promoting inclusion, understanding and respect between generations. Utilising the exceptional sporting talent in Grantham-based secondary schools, Carl will oversee a volunteering network of young people who will support and the Care Home provision.
Whilst inter-generational practice is not a new concept, it has never been trialled before at inspire+. We are incredibly enthusiastic about the programme and hope you keep an eye on its progress – watch this space!!!
