Apprentice of the Month – May 2024

Tell us about how your journey into PE teaching started.

It all began when I was in primary school—I loved PE, and since Year 2, I always knew I wanted to be a PE teacher. After school, I went to college, completed a Level 3 sports course, and passed my Level 2 as well. I’m currently working on my Level 4. During Year 10, I did work experience at my old primary school. Initially, I was supposed to split time between PE and being a teaching assistant, but the PE teacher was so impressed that he kept me teaching PE for both weeks.

What has been a standout experience during your apprenticeship?

One of the most memorable experiences has been doing the NFL Flag course. I’ve taken children to NFL Flag tournaments, and it’s great to see them develop a passion for such a new sport. It’s become my favorite sport to teach.

What motivated you to become an inspire+ apprentice?

I’ve always wanted to teach sports. I considered university, but I wanted to start teaching right away and have a more practical, hands-on experience. College teachers and my family encouraged me to pursue this path, and Inspire+ was the perfect opportunity since I learn best by doing rather than just studying.

What valuable skills have you gained during your apprenticeship?

I’ve learned to manage behavior in PE lessons and how to adapt to different children, especially SEN children. I’ve gained CPD training, which has improved my teaching. I’ve also led sports events, including organizing NFL Flag tournaments and sports days. The hands-on experience, especially in managing events, has been incredibly rewarding.

What have you enjoyed most about your apprenticeship?

I love teaching PE and seeing the children’s faces light up when they enjoy the lessons. Knowing that what I’m teaching makes them happy is the best part of my day.

What are your career ambitions for the future?

I want to continue teaching in primary schools and eventually work my way up to head of PE. This apprenticeship is helping me develop the skills and confidence I need to get there.

Do you have a favorite memory from your time as an apprentice?

When I first started at Paston, some of the boys weren’t happy about having three women teaching them. But after a few lessons, they warmed up to me, and now I’m their favorite PE teacher. It was also a great feeling when I managed to help children re-engage with lessons after they’d been upset, knowing that I could help them find joy in learning again.

Would you recommend inspire+ to others?

Definitely! I’ve already recommended it to a friend who joined in September. inspire+ has shaped who I am today. The support from my colleagues has been invaluable—I wouldn’t have made it through my coursework without them.
